SPEAKER BIOS
Henry A. Smith, III, is a partner with Smith & Downey, a law firm with a national practice concentrating in employee benefits, executive compensation, and labor and employment law. Henry advises for-profit, tax-exempt,
governmental and church-related employers of all sizes, in all industries and in all areas of the country, concerning
the full range of employee benefit and executive compensation issues. He is active in various American Bar Association and Maryland State Bar Association committees, and is a frequent lecturer and panelist at
educational programs dealing with employment issues. Henry is past Chair of the Maryland State Bar Association's Employee Benefits Committee and past Chair of the Maryland State Bar Association's Tax Section.
David Freedman is an associate with Barley Snyder in Lancaster. He is an experienced litigator focusing his practice principally in the field of labor and employment law including: FLSA, FMLA, Title VII, ADA, ADEA, the PA Human Relations Act, the PA Minimum Wage Act, the PA Wage Payment and Collection Law, the PA Unemployment Compensation Law and other employment laws. David represents public and private employers of all types and sizes in litigation before state and federal courts and administrative agencies. David also counsels employers on issues related to employee discipline, termination, and workplace harassment. David conducts internal investigations for employers and also provides employee training programs in both English and Spanish. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Clare House, a nonprofit shelter for homeless.
Charles Walters, a partner with Seyfarth Shaw, represents and counsels employers from many different industries
on the full range of employment and labor law matters. He has represented employers in collective bargaining,
arbitrations, grievance mediations, and NLRB and court litigation. He has assisted employers in many organizing
and decertification campaigns and provided supervisory training on positive employee relations and related
topics. Chuck regularly acts as lead counsel in employment cases before federal and state courts and administrative agencies, and has tried jury cases to verdict and arbitrations to award. He has an active employment counseling practice and regularly guides clients through federal, state, and local agency investigtions. He has particular expertise in the WARN Act and the Service Contract Act, and provides regular counseling on employment laws and issues. He represents U.S. employers with foreign operations and foreign employers with U.S. operations, and understands the unique employment issues
and challenges faced by such employers.
Eric Paltell, a partner with Kollman & Saucier, has practiced law since 1987, concentrating in the representation
of private and public sector employers in all aspects of labor and employment law. His practice includes defense of employment discrimination and sexual harassment suits, ADA and FMLA litigation, wrongful discharge suits, wage and hour cases, ERISA litigation, NLRB proceedings, collective bargaining negotiations, and grievance
arbitrations. A significant part of his practice involves management training and counseling. Each year since 2003, Eric has been listed as a top labor attorney in MD in the Chambers USA publication "America's Leading Business Lawyers." He has been listed by Baltimore Magazine as one of Maryland's "Super Lawyers" since 2007, and is one of the survey’s Top 100 Maryland Lawyers in 2012.
